Today is the Feast of Corpus Christi here in Germany and I thank God that I live in our new town after experiencing this holiday, Mainz-style. Although it is not a holy day of obligation, we went to Mass and the whole place was packed with retirees, single people, moms, dads and kids. After Mass, we processed through the streets with the Eucharist exposed in a monstrance. Hundreds of parishioners, altar servers, priests and members of the band walked and sang as we celebrated Corpus Christi and the gift of Christ’s divine presence in the Eucharist.
We processed and sang through the streets as police officers stopped traffic and well-wishers waved at us out their windows. We walked until we came to St. Stephan’s church, about a mile away. We went inside where the organ was played at full-volume and a huge choir sang old German-Catholic favorites. I love being a Catholic in Mainz. Happy Feast of Corpus Christi!
